Roses china
In 1752 Peter Osbeck, disciple of Linneaus, arranged for a China rose to arrive from Canton to Uppsala. This rose was then, in 1759, sent to Kew in England where it was called ‘Old Blush’. Subsequently, the Dutch East Indies Company imported a pink China rose that was planted in 1789 in the botanical gardens of Harotedarlem and Leiden. In 1789, Sir Joseph Banks brought it to England, where it was commercialized in 1795 under the name of “Parson’s Pink China”. Presumably, this was the original “Old Blush” rose. Uncertainty regarding the exact genetic lineage of these China roses prompted a revolution in the rose world. These precious plants imported from China brought with them the trait of continous blooming, a variety of colors never as yet seen in roses, and unfortunately, the loss of scent for many hybrids. They form shrubs with a light airy habit, thin canes and scarce foliage. Often the leaves are red when young. Their size varies, depending on the species.
