Roses centifolia
R. centifolia was born in Holland in the 16th century. It was long believed to originate from Caucasus, in southeastern Europe, but recent genetic studies have demonstrated that it is a hybrid of R. damascena (the damask rose) and R. alba (the alba rose). The centifolia is present in many still life paintings of the 17th and 18th century, thus it is also known as “the painter’s rose”. Centifolia roses have scented pink flowers with a very high petal count. Only hybrids descending from R. gallica have the reddish-violet color with chestnut highlights. Some hybrids are less than one meter tall, others are over two meters. Often they have a relaxed habit and thus are in need of some support. They are spectacular to see from afar and up close.
